Thanks to recent modernisation and embellishment, Puerto de Sóller (Port de Sóller) is slowly becoming one of the most fashionable destinations in Majorca: the idyllic almost perfectly round port, two sandy beaches, attractive shopping area, sea-side promenade and hiking trails throughout the valley and along the coast attract above all couples and independent travellers.
In order to reduce traffic in the port, a few years ago a tunnel was built that directs cars and buses to the car parks at the outskirts of town. And most of the sea-side promenade now is a very attractive pedestrian area; the historical tram being the only vehicle allowed to pass through. At the end of the harbour, the access to the viewing point, chapel and sea museum as well have been fully refurbished. And in the next years, a luxurious hotel overlooking the harbour will open its doors.
But the best viewing point of Puerto de Sóller is still the lighthouse high up on the cliff. Specially at sunset, there is no better romantic spot. Before you reach the harbour, turn off and follow the winding road up until you reach the car park. From up there you have a magnificent view of the harbourt and the mini-cruises leaving various times per day for Torrent de Paréis canyon. Standing there, it is easy to imagine just how difficult is must have been in former times to access the remote valley and how important maritime trade with France was for their survival.
The historic tram connects the harbour Puerto de Sóller with the village of Soller, located a few kilometers inland. Just perfect for combining sun & beach with culture, shopping, a visit of the weekly market or even a daytrip to Palma by train.
